Recruitment and Training
To become a Police Officer, candidates must be aged over 18 with good health and eyesight and have a high standard of physical fitness. There are no minimum restrictions on height requirements.

Applicants need to have a good general education but formal academic qualifications are not normally required. What is required is the potential to become a Police Officer after undergoing a period of comprehensive training.

All Police Officers go through the same basic training programme and serve their first two years as probationary constables.

Specialist Posts
A Police career offers a variety of opportunities at all ranks. Uniformed officers serving a diverse community are a vital part of the Police service and after successfully completing two years as a probationary constable, Police Officers can apply to move into specialised units such as CID, traffic, horses and dog section, and child protection.
Advancement

Officers are entitled to take the promotion examination to become a Sergeant after their probationary period and officers of exceptional ability can apply for the accelerated promotion scheme which gives an opportunity to rise quickly through the various ranks.
University graduates with the potential to reach high rank can be considered for a place on the Accelerated Promotion Scheme for Graduates.
